Pre-purchase full condition surveys are the most comprehensive type of survey and are carried out for the purchaser when purchasing a sailing yacht, powerboat, or commercial vessel. A full condition survey provides a full appraisal of the vessel’s structure, build quality, and all equipment. Pre-purchase surveys are carried out to clients' requirements using the very latest NDT equipment and techniques.
Structural insurance surveys may be used when a full condition survey is considered unnecessary. For Instance when the vessel is nearly new or when equipment and /or machinery have been separately inspected or not required to be inspected. It can also be required by insurance companies when insurance renewal is requested and a valuation of a vessel is required.
Warranty inspections and surveys provide third-party reviews and approval of work carried out on new and used yachts. This type of survey is normally carried out before a vessel leaves the manufacturers or a handover is in progress and the new owner requests inspections are carried out or when a vessel has been in for refit and independent inspections are required to bring any discrepancies to a successful conclusion.
Acceptance inspections on new vessels are carried out to confirm everything on board is working correctly, in date, and is fit for purpose before a vessel leaves the manufacturers or before a handover is completed. This type of inspection also includes sea trials and tests all systems while under load.
Refit inspections are undertaken to inform all involved what is required for the refit. During the refit, key stage inspections are carried out to ensure all new or refurbished equipment on board is being updated or replaced and installed to a good standard. Final inspections and sea trials are carried out to ensure all systems are working correctly before the yacht is signed off to the owner.
Damage inspections are carried out to assess the extent of damage sustained in all respects to a vessel after an incident. It is most important that all defects are discovered before reaching a settlement with a third party or insurance company. When there is major damage, it is advisable for the owner to engage a surveyor even though the insurance company may appoint its own surveyor.
Oil analysis is a routine activity for analysing oil health, oil contamination, and machine wear. The purpose of an oil analysis program is to verify that a lubricated machine is operating according to expectations. When an abnormal condition or parameter is identified through oil analysis, immediate actions can be taken to correct the root cause or to mitigate a developing failure. An obvious reason to perform oil analysis is to understand the condition of the oil, but it is also intended to help bring to light the condition of the machine from which the oil sample was taken. There are three main categories of oil analysis: fluid properties, contamination, and wear debris.
Only so much can be assessed statically or ashore and there are significant benefits of a sea trial to reinforce the findings or recommendations from the survey inspection. Sea trials are carried out on sailing yachts, motor boats and commercial vessels. Sea trials are carried out using the latest NDT techniques and equipment while systems are under load.
